London / Laurel County Kentucky
We're building a wonderful future on a colorful past.
What type of community will London and Laurel County be in the year 2020? A group of business and community leaders is addressing that question, along with input from the public. The Vision 2020 Committee, as the group is called, will identify needs and priorities that will help the community prepare for continued growth and prosperity into the next decade."The best thing we can do for the future is start to plan right now," said State Senator Tom Jensen, who represents Laurel County in the state legislature. "It will be a lot easier to maintain our orderly and progressive growth if we have a plan."Jensen was the impetus behind the Vision 2020 initiative. He has hosted several discussions about the needs and priorities for the community, and is still seeking input."I am looking for people in the community to tell me what they want and need and the direction they want to take," Jensen said. "That way, I'll know what to work for in Frankfort."The London-Laurel County Chamber of Commerce formed Vision 2020 to formulate and clarify the needs and priorities for the community, with a goal of assisting Jensen and other government leaders to plot a course for the future."Having been approached by our local government leaders. we understand the importance to garner feedback from citizens all across the county." said Randy Smith, executive director of the chamber of commerce. The chamber put forth a similar initiative in 1995 called Vision 2000. That committee set priorities in four areas—economic development, health, education and quality of life.Among the top priorities identified by Vision 2000 was the need for a community college in London and a new public library. Both eventually became a reality.Vision 2020 will focus on those same four areas, Smith said. The committee consists of a cross-section of leaders from the community as well as specialists in health, education and public works. The first step in the process will be to seek input from the community through a survey that will appear in local newspapers and online throughout the coming months. The survey is entitled "20 Questions Vital to London and Laurel County's Future."Smith urged the community to get involved with the initiative because the greater the input, the more effectiveness it will have."This is your chance to be heard," he said. "Give us your thoughts, your wish list, your concerns. If you do your part, the Vision 2020 Committee will make sure your input is placed in the hands of those that can make a difference for all of us."The survey results along with the committee's recommendations will be released later this summer, Smith said.
